QuickCheck: Did a runaway lorry crash into two parked cars in JB?


VIDEOS and photos of traffic accidents often go viral on social media, especially if the incident happens in broad daylight.

One such video making the rounds depicts a lorry colliding with two parked cars that were in designated parking spots on the roadside.

Is it true that this incident happened in Johor Baru, as claimed in captions and replies to the video post?

Police here confirmed the road accident that went viral on social media with Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat saying that all drivers involved had come forward to lodge reports about the incident that occurred at Jalan Sri Pelangi, Taman Pelangi, near a jewellery shop on Dec 10.

"The 38-year-old lorry driver was driving from Jalan Sri Pelangi towards Larkin and failed to control his vehicle, colliding with two cars that were parked in designated parking bays on the left and right sides of the road.

"The two cars were driven by a 38-year-old Singaporean man and a 20-year-old local woman," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Dec 16).

He added that no one sustained any injuries in the incident.

"This case is being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 (LN 166/59) for failing to control a vehicle.

"I urge members of the public who witnessed the incident to come forward to the Johor Baru South district police headquarters traffic department or contact investigating officer Sjn Nur Atiqah Arsin at 014-715 9957 to assist with the investigation," he said.

Meanwhile, in an official statement, the lorry company involved confirmed that the incident involved one of its vehicles.

"The company wishes to emphasise that this incident does not reflect the company’s values, ethics or operational standards. However, we take full responsibility for this matter and sincerely apologise to all parties involved.

"A police report has been lodged and investigations are ongoing. The employee involved has been subjected to appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the company’s internal policies.

"The company will not compromise on any negligence that may affect public safety or the company’s reputation. Follow-up actions and preventive measures are being and will be implemented to ensure similar incidents do not recur," it said.
