QuickCheck: Are scammers misusing the name and logo of Khazanah Nasional to promote fake investment schemes?

There have been reports that the name and logo of a Malaysian sovereign wealth fund have been misused to offer fake investment schemes. And that a civil servant had fallen victim to such a scam. Is this true as claimed?

Verdict:

TRUE

Khazanah Nasional Bhd has confirmed that scammers are misusing its name and logo to promote fake investment schemes.

“Khazanah does not run any ‘investment communities’ or solicit public investments.

“Protect yourself and your loved ones—verify first, don’t fall for false claims,” it posted on its official Instagram account.

Meanwhile, Tangkak OCPD Supt Roslan Mohd Talib said a 50-year-old man lodged a police report on Thursday (Dec 4) after realising he had been duped by scammers promising lucrative returns within a short period, along with a guarantee that his capital would be refunded.

He said the civil servant had lost RM10,500 after falling prey to a fraudulent investment scheme misusing the name of Khazanah Nasional Bhd.

“On Wednesday (Dec 3), the victim’s mobile phone number was added into a Telegram group using the name Khazanah Nasional Bhd offering investment opportunities.

“The victim then made three transactions into two different bank accounts believed to be mule accounts,” he said on Thursday (Dec 4).

Supt Roslan added that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.

He advised the public to remain cautious and not be easily swayed by schemes offering high returns with minimal effort and within an unusually short timeframe.

“The public is urged to always conduct proper checks to avoid becoming victims of scams.

“They should also keep themselves updated on scam tactics through the Commercial Crime Investigation Department’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and TikTok,” he added.

Supt Roslan said those who believe they have fallen victim to scams should immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 to prevent further outflow of funds from the suspect’s accounts.
