An attempt by six Myanmar nationals to enter Terengganu illegally failed after the car they were travelling in skidded at Kilometre 388.8 of the East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2) on Sunday.
Hulu Terengganu OCPD Supt Sharudin Abdul Wahab said the incident occurred at approximately 3.30pm when a team of police officers from the D7 Division of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Terengganu Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK), with assistance from Eastern Zone 4 highway operations officers, stopped a Honda Civic car.
According to him, the red vehicle was found to be driven in a suspicious manner before skidding at the location.
"An inspection of the vehicle found that a Myanmar national was acting as the driver and was transporting five passengers," he said when contacted on Monday (Nov 3).
"All of them, aged between 22 and 35 years old, failed to produce identification documents when requested," he added.
According to him, all six individuals have been detained to assist in investigations.
He said a Honda Civic car and an iPhone 12 Pro Max mobile phone believed to have been used for the smuggling operation were also seized.
"Preliminary investigations found that the driver of the vehicle concerned admitted to renting the car from an individual in Selangor on Saturday (Nov 1) before bringing the five Myanmar nationals to Terengganu," he said.
"This case is being investigated under Section 26J of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (ATIPSOM) Act 2017 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for migrant smuggling and illegal entry into Malaysia," he explained.
He said further investigations are being carried out to identify the migrant smuggling syndicate network and other individuals involved in the activity.
"The public is also advised not to be involved in any form of migrant smuggling activity as strict action will be taken in accordance with the law," he said.
