VERDICT:

TRUE

In a statement, Kulai OCPD Asst Comm Tan Seng Lee said the incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday (Sept 4) along the Skudai Highway in Johor Baru.

He said a 21-year-old man was arrested after a hearse belonging to Surau Nurul Haq was reported stolen and later involved in a collision with a lorry.

“While speeding along the highway, the stolen vehicle went out of control and collided with a lorry, causing an accident,” he said.

“A police team was dispatched to the scene at about 2.30am and checks confirmed the van had been stolen,” he said, adding that the suspect was arrested and the vehicle seized,” added ACP Tan.

ACP Tan said police informed the surau committee that their van had been found at the crash site and a 50-year-old local man later lodged a report at about 8.10am.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code for vehicle theft, which carries a jail term of one to seven years and a possible fine upon conviction.

“Checks revealed that the suspect has 14 prior cases in his criminal record and investigations are ongoing to determine if he was involved in other cases within and outside Kulai,” he added.

ACP Tan urged the public to channel any information related to the incident to the nearest police station.
