QuickCheck: Is an army regiment seeking funds for a banquet in Sarikei?

LETTERS are being circulated soliciting funds and bearing the name of a "staff sergeant" from the 510th Territorial Regiment based at the Sri Rejang Camp in Sibu, Sarawak.

The funds are purportedly for a "2025 Merdeka Day Banquet Programme" to be held at the Civic Centre in Sarikei, about 60km away.

One letter was even addressed to the Defence Ministry's Finance Division in Wisma Pertahanan, Kuala Lumpur.

Is the regiment seeking such allocations, as claimed?

VERDICT:

FALSE

In a statement on Facebook on Wednesday (Aug 27), the 9th Malaysian Infantry Brigade Headquarters has clarified that the letters are fake.

It said it had received four complaints about the letters, which falsely bear the name of a "staff sergeant" from the 510th.

“We are conducting a thorough investigation to identify those responsible for creating and distributing this fraudulent letter,” the statement read.

The 9th Brigade has urged any person or organisation receiving such a letter not to be misled and to report the matter to the police immediately.

“The letter is fake. We take this matter very seriously and will not hesitate to take strict action to protect the credibility and integrity of our team.

"The dissemination of such fraudulent activities must not be allowed to continue,” it stressed.

It urged the public to exercise caution and not to trust any unverified letters of this sort to avoid falling victim to fraud.
