Police have arrested two men believed to be involved in the theft of Telekom cables behind a university hostel in Pagoh, Muar, on Saturday (Aug 23).
Muar OCPD ACP Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz reported that the suspects were detained at 10.23am after officers on a crime prevention patrol noticed a suspicious MPV.
"When officers approached the vehicle, three men inside attempted to flee and the incident went viral on social media," said ACP Raiz Mukhliz.
The video shows the MPV being driven into a ditch, and its occupants scatter in an effort to evade capture.
"However, due to the police’s swift action, two suspects were apprehended while another has been identified and is being tracked by police," he added.
The case is being investigated under several legal provisions, including Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant, Section 431A for committing mischief against public services, and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug consumption. Both apprehended suspects have previous criminal records and tested positive for methamphetamine.
ACP Raiz Mukhliz emphasised the ongoing police efforts to combat cable theft, which poses risks to public services and community safety. Members of the public with any information on the suspect still at large are urged to contact the Muar district police headquarters or the nearest police station to assist investigations.
