QuickCheck: Can you rent an Ipoh City Council-owned stall through Facebook Marketplace?

FOR many budding small businesses, opening a stall is merely the first step, but one that can be a hurdle. Space, location and availability are always limited.

Thankfully, some local councils took the initiative and made the whole process easy and affordable.

Recently, a post popped up on Facebook Marketplace claiming that interested renters could rent a kiosk in the Ipoh City Council areas through its service.

Is the offer legitimate?

Verdict:

FALSE

The Ipoh City Council says that it has not authorised any middlemen or individuals to rent out its stalls or kiosks.

A city council spokesman stated that individuals interested in applying for city council-owned stalls should contact the Traders Management Unit within the Public Health and City Services Department directly.

"We are issuing a stern warning and would not hesitate to take legal action against any individual or party found tarnishing the city council's reputation, misusing its name, premises or official capacity without permission.

“The cooperation and vigilance of all parties are greatly appreciated,” the spokesman said in a statement on Tuesday (Aug 12).

The statement was issued following a post on Facebook's Marketplace that listed the rental of the city council's kiosks for RM1,500, which included a licensing fee.

The spokesman said the promotion was false and misleading.

"We advise the people to exercise caution if approached with such offers.

“The city council will not be held responsible for any loss or damage suffered by any party who accepts these unauthorised offers,” the spokesman added.
