UNLIKELY friendships can sometimes make for the best stories, especially when they involve unexpected antics.

A viral video claims to show a parrot in Malaysia chastising a cat, creating buzz online.

But is it true that the parrot actually scolded the cat for scratching a sofa?

Verdict:

TRUE

Yes, the video showing the parrot scolding a cat for scratching a sofa is from Malaysia – Kuala Pilah, Negri Sembilan to be exact.

Their owner, Norazrin Marzuki, 42, posted the now much-viralled video, titled "Mommy dan Assistant Marahkan Anak Kucing" (Mummy and her assistant scolding the cat), on TikTok on Friday (July 25).

So far, the video of Michael the parrot scolding Ticha the cat has garnered over 1.4 million views, over 118,000 likes and has been shared over 42,000 times.

Norazrin told Sinar Harian that she also has three other cats named Tam, Itot and Abu.

"Two weeks after I adopted Michael, Ticha came into our lives and they have never fought," she told the daily on Sunday (July 27).

"I trained Ticha to consider Michael as family, which has prevented any attacks," she said, adding that she adopted Ticha after the cat was almost hit by a car.

On how her other cats were with Michael, Norazrin said there have been no untoward incidents over the years.

"Michael and Tam are close because they grew up together," she said.

As for her other two cats, Itot and Abu, Norazrin said they were new to the family and that she was still training them to live in harmony with Michael.

Discussing Michael's abilities, Norazrin revealed that her parrot has shown an understanding of its surroundings and conversations since it was a year old.

She added that Michael responds to specific situations based on observations.

"Whenever a cat scratches the sofa, I would scold them. So, after Michael saw this situation a few times, he also started 'reprimanding' them for scratching the sofa.

"Michael is like a personal assistant, and I don't have to worry about leaving home because I have a helper to keep an eye on things," she said.
