QuickCheck: Will one of Malaysia's longest open-air markets be closed to visitors for three weeks?

A POST on Threads claiming that Pekan Sehari Temerloh, at 2.1km it was once Malaysia's longest open-air market, would be shut to outside visitors for three weeks due to extreme congestion sparked a flurry of reactions among netizens.

The post even helpfully suggested that visitors head to the markets in Bentong or Raub instead while the closure was in effect.

Is it true that Pekan Sehari Temerloh will be closed to visitors for three weeks?

Verdict:

FALSE

The Temerloh Municipal Council said the claim is not true and was never issued by them.

"In reference to a post currently going viral on social media claiming that Pekan Sehari Temerloh will be closed to visitors for three weeks, the council wishes to stress that the statement is untrue and was never issued by the council," it said in a statement shared on Facebook.

Pekan Sehari Temerloh is still operating as normal and no decision or directive to close it has been made.

The original Threads post claimed the market needed to be closed to outside visitors because of extreme congestion, adding that locals had not been able to enjoy their own market for eight months.

"Visitors can go to Pekan Sehari Bentong or Raub. Give Temerloh residents a chance to enjoy our own market for three weeks," the post said.

The council advised the public not to spread unverified information, warning that it could cause confusion among the community.

It added that the spread of false information could also affect traders and visitors who depend on the market's continued operations.

The council urged the public to obtain accurate and verified information only through its official channels to avoid misunderstandings and the spread of false news.
