A VIRAL video has sparked concern, showing a grey car resembling a police vehicle pursuing civilians.
The car, lacking official police logos, uses blue lights to mimic law enforcement.
Is it true that criminals are disguising themselves as policemen in such vehicles?
Verdict:
TRUE
The concerning video that went viral recently showed a grey vehicle that looks like a police car chasing a civilian on the highway.
According to a previous statement by Johor police posted on Facebook, criminals used police-like cars with blue flashing lights to deceive the public.
Not only that, the video is actually an old one of an incident that occurred in 2023.
The suspects who posed as policemen were apprehended just a day after the victim filed the report.
Crime analyst Kamal Affandi Hashim told MyCheck.my that genuine police do not use unmarked cars to stop civilians.
Official police vehicles are equipped with rectangular blue lights on the dashboard. Although unmarked police cars exist, they are not used for stopping civilian vehicles.
In emergencies, these unmarked cars coordinate with nearby stations to dispatch marked police vehicles.
Civilians are advised to be cautious and not to stop in dark areas if they encounter similar situations.
Kamal Affandi advises, "If you need to stop, choose a well-lit public area or go to the nearest police station."
He also recommended saving the Malaysia Control Centre (MCC) numbers for emergencies; they can be reached at 03-2266 3333 or 03-2266 3444.
