QuickCheck: Is someone impersonating the LHDN CEO on WhatsApp?

IN TODAY'S digital world, receiving unexpected messages from high-profile individuals may seem intriguing, but caution is advised.

Recently, messages have surfaced on WhatsApp, allegedly from the Chief Executive Officer of the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN).

Is it true that someone is impersonating the LHDN's CEO to spread misinformation?

Verdict:

TRUE

LHDN has clarified that it has never issued any statement or text message using the name of its CEO as circulated through the WhatsApp application and it expressed concern over the misuse of the CEO’s name on any platform that could mislead the public.

"We would like to emphasise that LHDN has never issued any statement on this matter and the public is advised not to disseminate false news or information," said LHDN in a statement.

The statement went on to warn that the dissemination of fake news can lead to prosecution under Section 505 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (AKM).

Additionally, it noted that "no texting through the WhatsApp application (about LHDN) can be done without its permission."

LHDN stated it would not hesitate to take strict action against any party involved in spreading false information, in accordance with the provisions of the law.

LHDN also reminded the public to, "be careful with any form of WhatsApp text, email, suspicious link and to report the message and block the number." - Bernama
