QuickCheck: Is a hotel-linked job recruitment site actually fake?

IN the current economy and job market, it is logical that many are on the lookout for new work opportunities and with this, employment sites would be where many would start looking online.

Recently, it was claimed that such a site - named "Lynxoasis.com" - is in fact fake and is actually part of an employment scam. Is this true?

VERDICT:

TRUE

According to the police's Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID), the site is in fact part of an employment scam.

It said in a post on the police's official social media accounts that investigations showed that the site uses both Facebook and Instagram to advertise part-time work as hotel booking agents.

"Those interested will be asked to open up an account at the 'lynxoasis.com' website and make hotel bookings as directed. The bookings have to be made using the victim's money first with the promise that it would be refunded along with a commission," said the CCID.

It added that victims were promised a commission ranging from 0.6% to 10% based on the job assigned.

"Lately, this syndicate has been found spreading a 'job for senior' message to promote part-time work on the same website. This message has also been sent through WhatsApp and targets senior citizens," added the police.

The police then said that 19 police reports have been linked to this website, with three of the reports coming from senior citizens and that they sustained losses amounting to RM269,237.

It advised that those who suspect that they have come across a scam or are looking for guidance can contact the National Scam Response Centre at 997.
