QuickCheck: Are scammers targeting applicants of unclaimed money?

VIRAL messages are claiming that the Accountant General's Department has appointed third parties to help retrieve unclaimed money on the public's behalf.

The messages cite an "RTM news report" that the department is seeking more information on each claimant before approving their applications, and that these third parties will help gather such data.

Is it true that these messages are the work of phishing scammers?

Verdict:

TRUE

The department has denied giving permission to any third party to get additional information from claimants seeking to recover unclaimed money.

It advised the public to beware of fake links contained in unverified forms that could compromise the security of their personal data.

"Proper information can only be obtained from the portal and official media of the department," it said in a statement.
