QuickCheck: Is a scammer tricking Malaysians out of their money with a fake NSC letter?

NOWADAYS, scams are everywhere. Scammers probably call you more than your loved ones do.

You have to give the scammers credit, though, for being a persistent and creative bunch.

There's always some new method cooked up to try and separate you from your life savings.

In a recently uncovered ploy, it is said that someone claiming to be a US permanent resident is scamming people into paying him money with fake letters supposedly from the National Security Council (NSC).

Have such attempts really been made?

VERDICT:

TRUE

According to the NSC, the foreigner – who goes by the name "John Thomas" – has been falsely claiming to represent it and collecting money from unsuspecting victims.

"We have received complaints that this individual is using our name and logo to collect money from other people and organisations.

"We deny appointing any foreigner to represent the council, especially in collecting money," the NSC said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (Feb 27).
