CULTURED pearls are man-made but they are still considered to be real pearls.

As a defence mechanism, it secretes a fluid comprising aragonite and conchiolin to cover the irritant. Layer upon layer is deposited on this particle until, after a period of time, a pearl is formed.
This can take up to several years.
All molluscs, including oysters, mussels, and clams can technically make pearls.
Cultured (farmed) pearls exist because of human intervention. When pearls are cultured commercially, an irritant is manually inserted into the mollusc.
Most of the pearls available on the market today are cultured pearls.
