A photo of nails being used to seal food packages has gone viral on social media. Is it illegal to seal up food packages in such a way?
VERDICT:

TRUE
In a statement on his official Facebook account, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said any trader who uses nails, staples or similar items that are dangerous in their packaging can be prosecuted in court.
He added that if convicted, they face a maximum fine of RM10,000, a jail term of up to two years, or both.
Dr Noor Hisham said heavier sentences can be imposed if such items are found inside the food, as Section 13 of the Food Act 1983 states that anyone found preparing or selling food with hazardous items found inside can face a fine, a jail sentence or both if found guilty.
He added that the maximum sentence under Section 13 is a maximum fine of RM100,000, a jail term of not more than 10 years or both, upon conviction.
"As such, the Health Ministry advises traders to not use nails, staples or similar items because such items can cause serious injuries if they enter food and are swallowed by consumers," he said.
