QuickCheck: Has heavy rain put the Kenyir Dam at risk?

Some social media users are using a video of an over-full and fast-flowing river posted by an elephant sanctuary near the Kenyir Dam as proof that the recent bad weather may have damaged the dam.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has said in a statement on Facebook that the water level of the Kenyir dam is still at a safe and controlled level.

It added that the river seen in the video is Sungai Telemong,which is located near Pengkalan Gawi in Tasik Kenyir and said that it does not flow out of Lake Kenyir.

On Thursday (Dec 30), an 18-second video uploaded to TikTok showed a river so heavy with water that it overflowed onto the bridge.

The original video uploaded on social media was by the Kenyir Elephant Conservation Village (KECV) who did not say it had anything to do with the dam, but had put the video up to say that the sanctuary was closed.

KECV's official Facebook said that the river water condition returned to normal at noon on Thursday (Dec 30).
