HANOI: Schools in at least 26 of Vietnam's 64 provinces are closed on Monday (Feb 3) following a government directive shuttering them for seven days in an attempt to prevent a coronavirus outbreak.
Some 15 million out of the country's 24 million students are not attending school on Monday.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc signed the directive on late Sunday.
Three Vietnamese citizens were confirmed to have contracted the virus at the weekend, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to eight.
The infected cases include two Chinese nationals, a Vietnamese American and four Vietnamese citizens.
As of Monday afternoon, Vietnam had reported 92 suspected cases with symptoms like high fever and cough, including some who visited infected areas in China.
Of these, 27 remain quarantined pending test results. - dpa/Asian News Network
