A MOBILE app allowing users to report hotels with bedbug infestations has gone viral in China, attracting more than 200,000 users within a month of its launch, China Press reported.
Known in Chinese as chou chong (bedbug), the platform enables users to pin a hotel’s location to alert others to an infestation.
Since its launch on Sept 21, more than 600 hotels have been flagged by guests, some of whom took to social media to share complaints of redness, swelling and itching after encountering the insects during their stays.
The app has drawn mixed reactions, with many internet users welcoming it as a way to pressure hotels into improving their hygiene standards.
Others, however, raised concerns that the platform could expose accommodation providers to malicious accusations.
Amid the growing attention, some hotels have begun submitting supporting documentation, including photographs of pest-control operations, to challenge reports lodged against them.
