JOHOR BARU: Several supermarkets and malls here have put additional security measures in place following reports of cyberattacks targeting refrigeration systems in Europe.
Econsave Cash and Carry general manager Mas Imran Adam said the precautionary measures included password protection to prevent unauthorised access to refrigeration systems.
“Some of our freezers are connected to the Internet, so we have taken steps to prevent such incidents from happening here.
“At the moment, there are no issues but we are keeping a close watch on this and will remain vigilant,” he said when contacted.
Mas Imran said the company was closely monitoring developments in Europe to ensure it was fully prepared should similar incidents occur here.
“However, there is no need for the public to panic over the possibility of supply disruptions, as supermarkets generally maintain enough stock to last between two and three months,” he said.
Angsana Mall Johor Baru chief operating officer Imran Salleh said the mall would keep on high alert to ensure smooth operations including for its tenants.
“At the moment, we do not face any issue and have not taken any drastic measure. It is very unlikely for such incidents to happen here, and the refrigeration system we have is also not accessible to external parties.
“However, we will not take it lightly and will closely follow developments in Europe,” he said.
A supermarket supervisor in Johor Baru, who wanted to be known as Amir, said his company had already alerted staff members.
“So far, we have not been given any order or told to change anything. But we have been told to be careful and ensure our refrigeration system is well protected,” he said.
