Student brings axe to school

Emergency response: An ambulance arriving at the school to bring the injured teacher to hospital.

KUCHING: Police are investigating a 16-year-old student for allegedly injuring a teacher at a private school and possessing firecrackers.

Sarawak acting police commissioner Deputy Comm Saifullizan Ishak said they received an emergency call at 8.03am yesterday about a student, believed to have injured a teacher with an axe.

The female teacher was reported to have sustained cuts on her hand.

“Police are conducting detailed investigations to identify the cause of the incident and obtain relevant evidence,” DCP Saifullizan said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon and Section 6(1) of the Explosives Act.

DCP Saifullizan also urged the public not to speculate or spread unverified information and to respect the investigation process.

Meanwhile, the student allegedly livestreamed the incident through a mobile phone attached to his forehead.

The video, which has been widely circulated, shows the student getting ready in the restroom before heading out into the corridor.

A CCTV recording of the classroom, which has also gone viral, shows the student entering and approaching the teacher with an axe before he was restrained.

Earlier, in a safety update to staff and parents, the school said the teacher was injured while attempting to seize an unauthorised sharp object from the student.

The teacher was sent to the hospital after the school contacted ambulance services.

The school said the student was promptly restrained and brought to the principal’s office where he remained under supervision until police arrived.

It also said police searched the student’s bag and identified an item requiring further examination.

“All students in the vicinity were promptly moved away from the area to ensure their safety.

“At no time during the incident were they approached by the student involved or were in harm’s way,” it added.

As a precaution and in accordance with police advice, the school was closed to assist investigations and students were dismissed early.

The school added that it would cooperate fully with the relevant authorities on the matter.
