TEMERLOH: A total of 14 individuals were arrested, and 235 summonses were issued for various offences during an integrated operation at the Temerloh Rest and Service (R&R) area along the East Coast Expressway Phase 1 (LPT1) on Thursday night (Oct 16).
Temerloh police chief ACP Mohd Nasyim Bahron said the four-hour operation, which was conducted simultaneously on both sides of the expressway from 8pm, aimed to ensure that motorists complied with traffic laws and that the vehicles they used were safe to drive.
He said the operation also involved the Road Transport Department (JPJ), Environment Department, Pahang branch of National Anti-Drugs Agency and highway concessionaire AFA Prime Bhd.
He said 10 of the 14 men arrested tested positive for methamphetamine, while the other four were undocumented immigrants from Indonesia and Bangladesh.
"Overall, 371 vehicles and 388 individuals were inspected, while 139 police summonses were issued for various traffic offences, including registration number violations, speeding, driving without a licence and expired Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM).
"The JPJ issued 96 P22 notices, while the Environment Department issued two compound notices and three notices instructing recipients to undergo retesting.
"The Environment Department also inspected eight diesel-related certificates,” he told a press conference here on Thursday night.
He said the operation was important in view of road accident statistics in Pahang, which recorded 2,161 cases from January to September this year, resulting in 44 deaths.
He said non-compliance with traffic laws not only endangered those committing the offences but could also cause serious injuries or deaths among other road users.
Motorcyclists and pillion riders accounted for the highest number of fatalities in the statistics, he added.
He said similar operations would be conducted periodically in districts with R&R facilities, with locations selected based on safety considerations and suitability for the operations. - Bernama
