Melaka polls: Akmal hints at possible move from Merlimau

PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has hinted at the possibility of moving from Merlimau to another constituency in the coming Melaka state election, floating Serkam and Sungai Rambai as possible options.

According to Sinar Harian, the Merlimau assemblyman raised the possibility in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Oct 14), thanking the constituency before asking where he might contest next.

“Thank you, Merlimau. Where to next? Would Serkam or Sungai Rambai be possible, or are there other suggestions?” he wrote.

The post drew various reactions, including from Arau MP Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, who expressed his willingness to help Muhamad Akmal.

Other social media users said they would support him regardless of the constituency, provided he continued helping residents facing problems.

Some also suggested that he consider contesting a parliamentary seat instead.

Muhamad Akmal won Merlimau in the 2021 Melaka state election with 5,633 votes, defeating Pakatan Harapan candidate Azrin Ab Majid, who received 2,385 votes, and Perikatan Nasional candidate Abd Alim Shapie, who garnered 1,622 votes.

He secured a majority of 3,248 votes.

Muhamad Akmal has yet to confirm whether he will defend Merlimau or contest in another constituency.

The Election Commission has fixed Nov 14 as polling day for the Melaka state election, with nominations on Oct 31 and early voting on Nov 10.
