Melaka polls: Ex-MB confirms not contesting state election

MELAKA: Former chief minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali says he will not defend Lendu in the coming state election after representing the constituency for three terms.

Sulaiman, who is also Masjid Tanah Umno deputy division chief, has decided not to offer himself as a candidate.

He first won the seat in the 2013 general election before retaining it in the 2018 general election and the 2021 Melaka state polls.

In 2021, he polled 4,486 votes and secured a majority of 3,104 over Perikatan Nasional’s Abdullah Mahadi and Pakatan Harapan’s Muhammad Asri Ibrahim.

Sulaiman was sworn in as Melaka’s 12th chief minister on March 9, 2020, succeeding Adly Zahari.

He took the oath of office again in November 2021 following Barisan's victory in the state election, before Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh succeeded him in 2023.

The Election Commission has set Oct 31 for nomination day and Nov 10 for early voting, with polling on Nov 14.
