MCMC probes AI manipulation of Dr M video

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) says it views with serious concern the dissemination of social media content that used artificial intelligence (AI) to manipulate footage of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as he mourned the passing of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.

“The use of technology to manipulate genuine footage in a way that could mislead the public, distort the context of an event, or undermine the dignity of individuals and their families should not be taken lightly, especially when it involves moments of loss and grief,” MCMC said in a statement yesterday.

“Technology should not be used to distort the truth or exploit a person’s grief at the expense of their dignity and humanity.”

The commission said it has contacted the relevant social media platform and is in the process of reviewing the content.

MCMC says appropriate action may be taken under the applicable laws, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588).

Members of the public are also reminded not to produce, upload or spread manipulated content that could potentially mislead the public or affect other parties, the commission added.
