KUALA LUMPUR: Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, has become the first alumna to have a building named after her at the prestigious Cheltenham Ladies’ College in England, with the college’s new sixth form centre named the Zarith Sofiah Centre.
The announcement was posted on His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia’s Facebook page yesterday.
Raja Zarith Sofiah was a student at Cheltenham Ladies’ College for five years from 1972 to 1977 before going on to pursue higher education at Oxford University.
The centre was named last Tuesday in Her Majesty’s honour, making Raja Zarith Sofiah the first alumna to have a building named after her.
Cheltenham Ladies’ College executive principal Eve Jardine-Young said that the institution was honoured to name the new sixth form centre after Raja Zarith Sofiah in recognition of her lifelong contributions and service.
“On behalf of the parents, pupils and staff of Cheltenham Ladies’ College, past, present and future, we are delighted to open this new sixth form centre and name it after Raja Zarith Sofiah,” she said.
Jardine-Young said the centre was the only building at the college named after an alumna.
“We look forward to welcoming new pupils in 2027 and sharing the development of this centre with Her Majesty,” she added.
