KUALA LUMPUR: Thousands gathered at Masjid As-Syarif, Taman Sungai Besi Indah here on Monday (Sept 28) afternoon to perform funeral prayers for the late Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
The ceremony was held twice, as the congregation was seen filling the mosque and spilling into the area outside the prayer hall.
The first funeral prayer, held after the Asar prayer, was led by Masjid As-Syarif Imam Muhammad Danial Hussain and attended by thousands, before a second funeral prayer was held to allow others to join in praying for the late Tun Dr Siti Hasmah.
Among those who performed the funeral prayers were former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah's husband, and Cabinet ministers.
Also in the prayer rows were her children and family members, as well as two other former prime ministers, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, members of parliament, corporate figures and members of the public from all walks of life.
The mosque's main prayer hall was packed with congregants, with some forming prayer rows outside the mosque to join in performing the funeral prayers.
Members of the public began gathering at the mosque compound from noon to pay their last respects to Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, with foreign representatives also present to pay their respects to the late Dr Siti Hasmah.
Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail also arrived at the mosque to pay their last respects to Tun Dr Siti Hasmah.
After the funeral prayers, the late Tun Dr Siti Hasmah's remains were taken to Precinct 20, Putrajaya, for the burial ceremony.
