Rules to detail security and monitoring of Najib’s movements during house arrest
KUALA LUMPUR: The Prisons Department is expected to issue standard operating procedures (SOP) for the implementation of Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s house arrest in the near future, says Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar.
He said the SOP would detail matters involving visits, security controls and monitoring of the former prime minister’s movements.
“I understand that there will be an SOP issued for the purpose of house arrest. He (Najib) would first have to pay the RM50mil fine at the Kuala Lumpur High Court Registrar’s Office before the house arrest process could proceed,” he said yesterday.
Meanwhile, personnel from the Prisons Department are believed to have assessed Najib’s residence, where he is expected to serve his house arrest.
At about 9.45am, a vehicle bearing the Prisons Department logo and carrying at least four personnel, was seen entering Najib’s residence in Jalan Langgak Duta.
The personnel are believed to have arrived to assess the residence ahead of Najib’s release from Kajang Prison, although it remains unclear when he will be transferred to begin serving his sentence at home.
Throughout the day, several police personnel in vans and patrol cars were also seen arriving at the residence, with a few entering the house before leaving.
The purpose of the visits was not immediately known.
A group of men clad in plain clothes were also seen on a walkabout in the vicinity.
A mobile police beat van was also parked outside the residence while reporters and photographers grew in numbers past noon and with some continuing to wait, anticipating Najib’s arrival
It was announced by the Prime Minister’s Department on Friday that Najib had been granted a conditional pardon allowing him to serve his remaining prison sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
It is learnt that the RM50mil fine attached to the conditional pardon for the former premier was yet to be settled and a solidarity fund launched by Umno to help him raise funds had grown to RM1mil, according to Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
The conditional pardon was granted at the 64th meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board on Friday, chaired by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
The Prime Minister’s Department said the pardon was subject to Najib complying with all conditions imposed including the settlement of the fine.
