Miri cops probe viral video of girl being hit by other kids

KUCHING: Police are investigating a quarrel involving several children in Miri after a 44-second video of the incident went viral on social media.

Miri police chief Asst Comm Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed that police received a report on the incident, which occurred at about 5pm on Wednesday (Sept 16).

"Seven children aged eight to 13 years were involved in the incident and we have traced all of them," he said in a statement on Thursday (Sept 17).

ACP Farhan said the children involved were friends who frequently played together.

He said the quarrel occurred when one of them, a girl, used abusive words against the others, causing them to kick and push her.

"The victim who was hit in the video did not suffer any serious injuries," he added.

Police have opened an investigation paper under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt after the victim's father lodged the report at 2.40pm on Thursday.

ACP Farhan advised the public not to speculate or spread sensitive issues on social media.

He said anyone with information on criminal activities should lodge a police report.
