PUTRAJAYA: Bukit Aman Management Department director Datuk Seri Abdul Aziz Abdul Majid is the new Deputy Inspector-General of Police.
He succeeds Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, who retired in July, and follows Datuk Seri Ibrahim Darus, who held the position briefly in an acting capacity.
This was announced by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in a statement yesterday.
Abdul Aziz, 59, was born on Feb 19, 1967 in Penaga, Penang, and holds a Master’s degree in Social Science (Police Studies) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He joined the police force on July 1, 1995.
He has held various top positions within the force, such as Director of the Management Department, Deputy Director of the Special Branch, Deputy Director of the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department, deputy police chief of Penang, chief assistant director of Management (Policy/Resources), and chief assistant director of the Integrated Special Investigation Team.
“Based on his expertise and experience in policing, he possesses the competence and strong leadership qualities required to serve as deputy IGP. The government congratulates him on his appointment,” Saifuddin Nasution said.
Meanwhile, Saifuddin Nasution said police investigations are ongoing into the allegation made by Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim that he was coerced into signing a proclamation to remove Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as the state’s Yang di-Pertuan Besar.
“The police have opened an investigation paper, and the investigation is still ongoing. Any updates will be shared with the media,” he told a press conference after the ministry’s monthly assembly here on Monday.
On another matter, Saifuddin Nasution said that the Finance Ministry has agreed in principle to look into increasing the daily allowance rate for the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela).
“If we look at the current rate of RM8 per hour and multiply that with a duty period of eight hours a day for 24 days a month, the allowances accrued do not meet the minimum wage amount.
He added that while no amount has been proposed for the increase, the matter was still being studied, including comparing allowances with the security company industry.
“If you look at security companies, for example, they are at a level of around RM12 to RM13 per hour for each assignment, together with payments for PERKESO and other benefits.
“But these are business entities providing security services.”
He added that there were currently 150,000 Rela personnel, with 35,000 on active duties for road assistance management and security.
On the scheduled delivery of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency ship being built in Turkiye, he said that a second ship was slated for delivery by the end of next year.
“Compared to the various cases we have encountered, such as the LCS and the Pulau Indah vessel, money was spent, but the ships were not completed.
“We are confident that the ministry made the right decision regarding the short construction period and reasonable price.”
On the offer of a second ship given by the United States, he said Malaysia does not need to accept it if experts deem it unfit for use operationally or financially.
