KUALA LUMPUR: A chairman of a housing committee of a statutory body in Johor was detained over allegations of soliciting and receiving bribes and abusing his position in connection with applications for government housing lots.
The male suspect, in his 40s, was detained at about 7.30pm on Monday (Sept 7) after he turned up at the Johor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office to have his statement recorded.
Sources said the suspect allegedly committed the offences between 2016 and 2025.
"The suspect is believed to have abused his position by asking about RM4,000 from each of 400 applicants for housing lots, involving a total of about RM1.6mil.
"The money was allegedly misappropriated for personal use through withdrawals from the committee's bank account using fake invoices," a source said on Tuesday (Sept 8).
Johor MACC director Datuk Hairuzam Mohmad Amin@Hamim said the case was being investigated under Sections 16(a)(A), 18 and 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
He said the suspect would be released on MACC bail after his statement was recorded.
