KUALA LUMPUR: DAP's Central Executive Committee (CEC) has called for Bills to amend the Federal Constitution to separate the powers of the Attorney General (AG) and Public Prosecutor (PP), as well as to limit the Prime Minister's tenure, to be tabled and decided on in Parliament when it reconvenes in October.
DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the CEC made the decision at its meeting on Monday (Sept 7), its first since the party's National Congress on Aug 16.
He said the CEC respected the congress' decision to mandate the party leadership to remain in the Madani Federal Government until the end of the current parliamentary term.
"At the same time, DAP will continue to strive to ensure that various reform agendas are implemented.
"In this regard, the CEC takes the position that the two important reform agendas involving amendments to the Federal Constitution, the separation of powers between the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor, and the establishment of a term limit for the Prime Minister, should be debated and decided on in Parliament during the coming October sitting," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 8).
Loke said the CEC also resolved to call on the Penang state government, led by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, to enact a Constituency Development Fund law.
He said the legislation would ensure fair and equal treatment for all Penang assemblymen, regardless of their political affiliation, and guarantee equal constituency development allocations through legislation.
"The CEC believes the same principle should be extended to the federal level and implemented by all state governments nationwide.
"Constituency development allocations should be distributed equally, regardless of the political party represented by the elected representative," he said.
Loke added that the meeting also discussed the party's preparations for the upcoming Melaka and Sarawak state elections.
"DAP will make the necessary preparations to defend all the seats we currently hold, while also identifying other potential seats to contest," he said.
