IPOH: A single mother got an early morning shock when a lorry carrying sand crashed into the porch of her rented house on Jalan Sungai Pari in Buntong here on Monday (Sept 7).
C. Veronica, 49, was going to the kitchen after waking up at about 5am when she heard two loud crashes.
"Suddenly, all the lights went out and everything became dark. I ran outside, thinking there had been an accident on the road.
"To my horror, I saw a lorry had crashed through my gate and into my porch, hitting my car," she said.
Her two children, aged 14 and 22, were asleep at the time.
Veronica, who has been living in the house for nine years, said she panicked initially.
"I did not know what to do. Thankfully, the lorry did not (reach) the house," she said.
Veronica said the lorry driver was trapped in the vehicle and called for help, saying he was in pain as his leg was stuck.
"By then, my neighbours had already come outside after hearing the noise. They called the ambulance, police and Fire and Rescue Department," she said.
She said the crash also damaged a utility pole outside the house, resulting in a power outage affecting about 120 houses in the area.
Tenaga Nasional Bhd personnel later arrived to check on the fallen pole.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operations) Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said in a statement that the lorry driver was trapped and injured.
He said the department received a distress call at 5.15am and firefighters from the Ipoh and Pasir Puteh stations arrived at the scene at 5.23am.
"Upon arrival, the operations commander directed our personnel to carry out rescue work using hydraulic equipment.
"The victim was successfully extricated and handed over to Health Ministry personnel for further treatment.
"The operation was brought under control at 5.28am and ended at 6.43am," he said.
