Haze: King consents to lifting of emergency in Serian

KUALA LUMPUR: The emergency declaration in Serian, Sarawak, imposed for hazardous haze conditions, has officially ended with the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.

The emergency was declared on Friday (Sept 4).

In a statement on Monday (Sept 7), the Prime Minister’s Office said the decision was made after considering the advice of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the views of Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, and reports from relevant agencies.

It said the latest Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in Serian were no longer at hazardous levels.

"However, the haze situation in Sarawak has yet to fully recover, with API readings in several areas, particularly Serian and Samarahan, still at very unhealthy levels," it said.

The Federal and Sarawak governments will continue to closely monitor the situation, it added.

Residents in affected areas have been advised to limit outdoor activities and follow instructions from the authorities.
