A WOMAN in India won a 3km-race running barefoot and in a saree to get the prize money for her daughters’ education, Makkal Osai reported.

Upon receiving the trophy and 3,000 rupees (RM128), 47-year-old Ramabai Ranveer touched people’s hearts by saying she would use the cash to buy books for her children.

Ramabai, 47, who works as a cook, is raising her two daughters after her husband died.

On the day of the run in Maharashtra state, Ramabai turned up wearing a saree and rubber slippers.

She began at a steady pace while other runners rushed ahead, but soon overtook the pack after discarding her slippers when they began to slip.

She crossed the finish line in first place to loud cheers from spectators.

Her daughter Pooja, who attends the tuition centre where Ramabai works, came in second.

She had encouraged her mother to join the race but did not expect her to come first, Pooja said.
