FOR fraternal twins Nasrimas and Nasrizat Asri, being born on Aug 31 has meant growing up sharing a unique bond, not only with each other, but also with the country they call home – Malaysia.
Every National Day brings a double celebration for the twins – one for the nation and another for two siblings whose lives began on the same historic date.
The 34-year-old twins were born on National Day in 1992.
For Nasrimas, who works in trade operations, Aug 31 carries a significance that goes beyond birthday celebrations.
“It is a reminder of the sacrifices made by those before us who fought for our freedom. Because of them, we can live peacefully and freely today.
“I think we should always appreciate our independence and be grateful for the peace we enjoy today.
“It is truly quite a unique feeling, knowing that Aug 31 is not only our birthday, but also an important day for Malaysia,” she added.
For Nasrizat, National Day also carries personal memories due to their father having served as a police officer.
“On Aug 31, 1992, my father was on duty in Kuala Kubu Baru. My mother was in Alor Setar, Kedah, watching the National Day parade on television when she went into labour.
“Our neighbour helped her to the hospital and that’s how we were born,” he explained.
Looking back, Nasrimas said she is grateful to have been born in a peaceful and harmonious country.
Aug 31 is more than a shared birthday for Nasrimat and Nasrizat; it is a reminder of their bond, their family and the freedom that Malaysians continue to enjoy.
“I hope all of us Malaysians will appreciate our independence and be grateful for the peace we enjoy today,” Nasrizat said.
For Nur Aliya Maisarah Faizi, being born on National Day represents a deep connection to her homeland like no other.
Aug 31 has always made National Day felt special for the preschool teacher.
“The feeling of being able to celebrate both my birthday and Malaysia’s independence together is really special.
“Growing up, Malaysian flags, National Day decorations and celebrations became the norm for me on my birthday.
“It was a memorable part of my childhood,” said the 20-year-old.
As she grew older, she came to appreciate the meaning behind it even more.
“It makes me feel proud and grateful to share my birthday with such an important day in our history,” she said.
Nur Aliya said that sharing her birthday with National Day also reminds her to appreciate the peace and freedom the country enjoys.
“I am forever grateful to be born and raised in Malaysia, a country with so many different cultures, traditions and backgrounds.
“National Day reminds me to always appreciate the peace and freedom that we have today and to play my part, no matter how small, in making Malaysia a better place,” she added.
