KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines confirmed that Flight MH89, bound for Kuala Lumpur from Tokyo Narita International Airport, discontinued take-off following a technical issue involving one of its engines.
The national carrier said all passengers and crew on board the flight yesterday were safe.
“The flight was cancelled and the aircraft is undergoing a thorough technical inspection,” the airline said in a statement to Bernama.
Malaysia Airlines said all affected passengers were assisted with their onward travel arrangements and would be accommodated on the next available flights.
“Meals, lounge access and hotel accommodation have been provided where applicable while alternative travel arrangements are arranged,” it added.
The airline apologised for the inconvenience and disruption caused while expressing appreciation for passengers’ patience and understanding.
“The safety and well-being of our passengers and crew remain our highest priority,” the airline added.
Japanese media reported that black smoke was seen emanating from the aircraft as it taxied onto the runway at around 10.40am Tokyo time.
