Malaysia Airlines aborts Tokyo take-off over engine issue

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Air­lines confirmed that Flight MH89, bound for Kuala Lumpur from Tokyo Narita Inter­national Air­port, discontinued take-off follo­wing a technical issue involving one of its engines.

The national carrier said all passengers and crew on board the flight yesterday were safe.

“The flight was cancelled and the aircraft is undergoing a tho­rough technical inspection,” the airline said in a statement to Bernama.

Malaysia Airlines said all affected passengers were assisted with their onward travel arrangements and would be accommodated on the next available flights.

“Meals, lounge access and hotel accommodation have been provi­ded where applicable while alternative travel arrangements are arranged,” it added.

The airline apologised for the inconvenience and disruption caused while expressing appreciation for passengers’ patience and understanding.

“The safety and well-being of our passengers and crew remain our highest priority,” the airline added.

Japanese media reported that black smoke was seen emanating from the aircraft as it taxied onto the runway at around 10.40am Tokyo time.
