Measures being taken to beef up airport security

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airports and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) are stepping up security and safety measures at the country’s airports as part of a broader government effort to strengthen border controls and aviation safeguards.

In welcoming the government’s move towards a more coordinated multi-agency approach, Malaysia Airports managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said clearer roles among agencies would improve the effectiveness of security operations while allowing the airport operator to focus on safe, secure and efficient operations.

He said the arrangements involving the National Immigration Command Centre (NICC) and the joint Home Ministry-Transport Ministry Technical Committee will facilitate closer coordination between the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), CAAM, Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Customs Department and Immigration Department.

“The coordinated approach would provide greater clarity on the respective responsibilities of agencies involved in airport security.

“We remain fully committed to playing our part and working alongside the government and enforcement agencies to safeguard the country’s gateways,” he said.

Meanwhile, CAAM has introduced stricter requirements to prevent alcohol and drug misuse among aviation personnel performing safety-critical functions.

CAAM chief executive officer Datuk Capt Norazman Mahmud said Safety Directive 02/2026 – Strengthening Fitness-for-Duty and Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Misuse, issued on Aug 7, requires Malaysian airline operators to test 100% of active flight and cabin crew for drugs within the prescribed implementation period.

He added that operators must also increase unannounced random alcohol and drug testing, conduct immediate tests where impairment is suspected and strengthen recruitment, background verification and recurrent screening for personnel holding security passes.

“We will enhance oversight through risk-based surveillance, unannounced inspections and focused audits, including verification of testing records,” he said.

Norazman said the measures were aligned with broader efforts to strengthen risk-based screening, vetting and access controls for passengers, crew and airport personnel.

“Safety-critical personnel carry a significant responsibility in ensuring the safety of every flight.

“CAAM therefore expects the highest standards of fitness, professionalism and accountability from all personnel entrusted with these responsibilities,” he said.
