KULAI: A manufacturer here has been ordered to immediately cease its operations after it was found flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down.
Johor housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the Kulai Municipal Council (MPKu) has issued an order to temporarily suspend operations at the premises until its management comes forward to provide an explanation.
The order was issued in accordance with By-Law 49(2) - Power to Close Premises and By-Law 45(1) - Hoisting of Flags under the Local Government By-Laws on Trade, Businesses and Licensing 2019.
MPKu enforcement personnel were earlier seen putting up yellow tape at the factory gate along with the suspension notice.
“I am disappointed by the negligence and irresponsible action because the Jalur Gemilang is not just a flag; it is a symbol of the country’s sovereignty, dignity and identity.
“This matter cannot be taken lightly and should not be normalised or left without consequences," he said in a statement on Monday (Aug 17).
He added that the upside-down Jalur Gemilang has since been taken down and hoisted the right way at the factory.
Mohd Jafni said the police have opened an investigation into the incident, including calling the company’s director, and that necessary action would be taken against those found to have flouted the law.
He also reminded commercial and industrial premises operators to respect the national flag.
“Using negligence as an excuse cannot be the licence for anyone to belittle the country’s symbol,” he said.
