PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across nine states, effective until 4pm on Sunday (Aug 16).
In the northern region, the weather alert covers the entire states of Perlis and Pulau Pinang. Affected areas in Kedah include Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Sik, Padang Terap, Pokok Sena, Pendang, Yan and Kuala Muda.
On the east coast and inland areas, severe weather is expected in Gua Musang in Kelantan, alongside Kemaman, Dungun and Hulu Terengganu in Terengganu. Pahang will also see storms in Lipis, Jerantut and Kuantan.
In the southern region, the warning covers Port Dickson in Negeri Sembilan, as well as Tangkak, Muar and Batu Pahat in Johor.
Over in East Malaysia, the alert spans northern Sarawak, affecting Miri (Miri, Subis, Beluru and Marudi) and Limbang.
MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.
A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
The notice was officially issued by the department at 12.05pm on Sunday.
