PUTRAJAYA: Remaining in the Federal Government ensures DAP retains a seat at the decision-making table to defend public interests and rectify flawed policies, a Kedah DAP delegate argued.
Lim Hooi Yee said leaving the government would mean forfeiting the party's ability to influence decisions from within.
Making the case for DAP to serve out the full parliamentary mandate, Lim noted during debates at the DAP national conference on Sunday (Aug 16) that while opposition status offers freedom to criticise, it strips the party of governance leverage.
Addressing recent state poll setbacks in Sabah, Johor and Negri Sembilan, she cautioned delegates against punishing the Federal Government over state-level outcomes.
Lim highlighted welfare initiatives like MyKasih and Sara as programs that were sound in principle but suffered execution flaws that impacted small rural traders.
She stressed that remaining in power did not mean becoming a submissive partner.
“We stay and finish the mandate. We speed up reform, we review policies that oppress the people – especially small and medium enterprises. We do not leave. We improve, we work, and we press on with reform,” Lim said.
DAP delegates are set to vote on whether the party should remain in the Federal Government later on Sunday.
