VOCAL coach and singer Datuk Syafinaz Selamat, 53, believes judges in singing competitions should not feel obliged to take on the role of teachers, Kosmo! reported.
She said constructive feedback can be offered from different perspectives, rather than relying solely on technical criticism.
“Sometimes technical language is difficult to explain because it is not something we use in everyday conversation.
“We need to find different ways to discuss contestants’ performances. We can’t keep saying the same thing every week,” she said, adding that she herself had previously been criticised for being overly technical in her comments.
The singer also stressed that judges should do their homework by understanding various performance elements including musicality, emotional delivery, stage presence and choreography.
She recently drew praise from viewers after appearing as a guest judge on Big Stage Rocketfuel, with many commending the constructive and instructive feedback she gave contestants.
