KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s northern land border has become the main entry point for foreign poachers, particularly from Vietnam, seeking to hunt endangered wildlife, including the critically endangered Malayan tiger.
Syndicates use illegal border crossings to enter the country before moving into forest reserves believed to be home to their target species, said Senior Asst Comm Datuk Mohd Zaki Ashar, commander of the Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Investigation Intelligence of the Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department.
