KUALA TERENGGANU: Nearly 1,300 individuals were arrested for wildlife poaching and forest encroachment, with seizures totalling RM426.90mil, under Ops Bersepadu Khazanah (OBK) between 2019 and July 31 this year.
Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) Enforcement Division principal assistant director Mohammad Khairi Ahmad said the 96 joint operations resulted in 903 cases involving 961 locals and 323 foreigners.
OBK is an integrated enforcement initiative bringing together multiple agencies to curb illegal poaching, wildlife smuggling and land encroachment across protected habitats.
“The operations led to the detection of 2,869 snares believed to have been set for poaching wildlife,” Mohammad Khairi told Bernama during a case-sharing session at the state-level 2026 World Ranger Day celebration at Wisma Darul Iman here yesterday.
He added that enforcement teams recorded 933 tent sites linked to encroachment or poaching, alongside 3,492 signs of poaching and 2,741 signs of illegal entry throughout the operations.
“In addition, 212 cases of tree felling or forest damage were recorded.”
