KOTA BARU: A 56-year-old schoolteacher is counting her blessings after being pulled to safety from the depths of a well in a dramatic rescue in Kampung Bata Chicha Tinggi.
The woman, a teacher at a secondary school near Pasir Mas, lost her footing and plunged into the 5.48m-deep well behind the kitchen of her house at about 7.50am yesterday.
The Pasir Mas Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call and deployed a team of six firefighters led by senior fire officer I Asraf Mat Naizi, who arrived at the scene just six minutes later, Bernama reported.
The victim’s sister, who lives next door, raised the alarm after hearing her cries for help and immediately contacted emergency services.
“Upon arrival, we found the victim had fallen into the well located behind the kitchen of her house,” Asraf said in a statement yesterday.
He said the teacher lived with her niece and relied on the well as the household’s water source.
Firefighters carefully hoisted the woman out of the narrow well. She suffered only minor injuries.
