PETALING JAYA: About 225,000 tonnes of carbon emissions were avoided last year through the use of public transport operated by Prasarana Malaysia Bhd.

Prasarana said the drop was driven by an average 1.31 million passenger rides daily across its public transport networks.

It added public transport use took an estimated 377,000 private vehicles off the roads each day.

The figures were among the key findings in Prasarana’s 2024/2025 Sustainability Report, which outlined the public transport operator’s environmental, social and governance efforts.

Its group chairman Tan Sri Mohd Nasir Ahmad said sustainable mobility had an important role to play in tackling climate change, particularly as cities accounted for nearly 70% of global carbon emissions.

“Sustainable mobility is not only part of the solution to climate change but also an important catalyst in shaping healthier cities,” he said at the launching of the report yesterday.

Speaking at a press conference later, Mohd Nasir said the report would serve as a benchmark to help Prasarana identify gaps in operations and monitor its performance. He added that Prasarana was targeting an average daily ridership of 1.4 million passenger journeys this year and a projected 1.7 million in 2027.

Its president and group chief executive officer Amir Hamdan said Prasarana would step up engagement with passengers to better understand their needs and increase ridership.

To further reduce its carbon footprint, Prasarana said it would continue expanding sustainability plans through new rail networks, greater adoption of electric buses and energy efficiency measures.

Meanwhile, its health, safety, security, environment and sustainable development group chief Idzqandar Abu Bakar said consultants would be engaged to study ways to keep services running during floods and heavy rain, adding that the company already identified areas at high risk of inundation.

According to the report, Prasarana’s public transport network recorded about 1.31 million passenger journeys daily across Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang and Kuantan in 2024 and 2025.
