PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across eight states, effective until 5pm on Wednesday (July 29).
In the northern region, the weather alert covers the entire state of Pulau Pinang and Perak. Affected areas in Kedah include Langkawi, Yan, Pendang, Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu.
On the east coast and inland areas, severe weather is forecast for Pahang, covering Tanah Tinggi Cameron, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, Bentong and Kuantan.
In the central region, the warning covers Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor and Hulu Selangor in Selangor.
Further south, the alert extends to several areas in Negeri Sembilan (Jelebu, Kuala Pilah, Rembau, Jempol and Tampin), the entire state of Melaka, and several districts in Johor, namely Tangkak, Mersing, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Baru.
Over in East Malaysia, the warning spans multiple divisions in Sarawak, including Kuching (Bau and Kuching), Samarahan (Samarahan and Asajaya), Betong (Saratok and Kabong), Sarikei (Sarikei and Meradong), Sibu (Selangau), Mukah and Limbang.
For Sabah, affected locations include Pedalaman (Sipitang, Tenom, Beaufort, Keningau and Tambunan), the Pantai Barat region, Tawau (Lahad Datu), Sandakan (Kinabatangan and Sandakan) and Kudat (Kota Marudu).
MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.
A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
The notice was officially issued by the department at 1.40pm on Wednesday.
