REMBAU: Do not use matters relating to Negri Sembilan’s adat (traditional customs) as campaign issues in the state polls, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
The Barisan Nasional deputy chairman urged the party’s election machinery not to resort to this in order to preserve harmony throughout the democratic process.
Mohamad, who is also Umno deputy president, said Negri Sembilan’s adat institution should be respected and must not be mixed with politics, warning that doing so could only create unnecessary tensions.
“I have made it clear and reminded everyone that during the election campaign, we must not touch on adat issues.
“We should not drag adat issues into politics, especially during campaigning, as this will only complicate the situation (in the state).
“There is no need to use adat issues as campaign material,” he told reporters after the nomination process at Dewan Seri Rembau yesterday, Bernama reported.
On cooperation between Barisan and Perikatan Nasional, Mohamad said both coalitions would continue their electoral understanding to maximise voter support in constituencies where Barisan is not contesting.
This would help secure victories for candidates from both coalitions across all 36 state seats, he noted.
“We are maintaining an understanding, not forming a coalition as was seen in Johor.
“I hope that in Negri Sembilan we will help one another to maximise support in the constituencies being contested,” he said.
Mohamad is facing Pakatan Harapan’s Dr Azizul Hakim Mahdi in a straight contest for the Rantau seat.
