Thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for five states until 3pm

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across five states, effective until 3pm on Saturday (July 18).

In the northern region, the weather alert covers the entire state of Perlis alongside Langkawi in Kedah. Affected areas in Perak include Kinta, Kampar, Batang Padang and Muallim.

In the central region, severe weather is expected in Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor and Hulu Selangor in Selangor.

Over in East Malaysia, the warning spans multiple divisions in Sarawak, including Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit (Song and Kapit), Bintulu (Tatau and Bintulu), Miri (Miri) and Limbang (Lawas).

For Sabah, the alert encompasses Pedalaman (Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Keningau and Tambunan), the West Coast and Kudat.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.

The notice was officially issued by the department at 1.20pm on Saturday.
