Melaka Bersatu Youth chief quits party ahead of state election

MELAKA: Melaka Bersatu Youth chief Muhammad Jefri Safri has quit Parti Wawasan Negara (Wawasan) ahead of the state election.

Muhammad Jefri, who also headed the Jasin Bersatu division, said he no longer shared the party’s political direction despite being touted as a potential candidate for the Bemban state seat.

“No one from the central leadership came to Jasin to see us, and it felt as though we were not appreciated.

“I worked hard every day, meeting people, engaging with the community and organising the party machinery,” he said on Sunday (Oct 18).

He was speaking after handing his membership application to Wawasan secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah during the Lenggang Warisan Melaka 2026 programme at the Hang Tuah Museum in Duyong here.

The programme was organised by Persatuan Sosialis Wanita Melaka (MeSWA) together with Melaka Wawasan’s women's wing.

“There may be an opportunity to contest, but when my heart is no longer in it, and I want to be with Perikatan,” he said.

On the future of the Jasin Bersatu division, Muhammad Jefri said that his departure would not cause it to be dissolved.

He said the deputy division chief could assume the leadership temporarily, while members were free to decide their own political future.

Muhammad Jefri also predicted that more Bersatu leaders in Melaka, including several deputy division chiefs, would follow suit.

Meanwhile, Saifuddin welcomed his application.

“This supports our efforts to increase membership and strengthen the party,” he said.

Saifuddin said Wawasan now had 175 divisions nationwide, with its growing membership helping to bolster the party’s machinery ahead of the Melaka polls.
